ビル・イングリッシュ:
「……乗員は、全員が安全シートに座ったままで、ハーネスも装着したままでした。そして、全員が死亡していました。」

パネリスト:
「どんなふうに損壊していたんですか？」

ビル・イングリッシュ:
「当時は分からなかったんですが、今でいう“典型的な”意味での損壊でした。目はなくなっていて、顔の一部は完全に皮膚が剥がされ、骨がむき出しになっていました。白くきれいな骨でした。歯も見えていて、首や喉の一部は食道に至るまで切除されていて、舌も取り除かれていました……」

パネリスト:
「つまり、いわば……」

ビル・イングリッシュ:
「……家畜の損壊事件のような感じです。そう、それに血がなかったんです。普通なら、ああいう状況では血がそこら中に飛び散っているはずでしょう。しかもあんな狭い機内なら、血で滑るくらいになっていてもおかしくない。でも、まったくなかったんです——」

「——血がなかったという事実そのものが、私たちには非常に不可解でした。機内をおよそ1時間ほど調べて、認識票を回収し、あらゆるものを写真に収めた後、フライトレコーダーを取り外しました。そして機体を封鎖し、爆薬を仕掛けました。」

［テープ中断］

ビル・イングリッシュ:
「……その件については、それ以上関わることはありませんでした。私は1971年に2年間の任務を終えてベトナムを離れ、その後ドイツへ転属になりました。その頃には結婚していて、妻は——」
［テープ中断］
「——それで、私たちはイギリスへの転属を選びました。妻がRAFチックスアンズの軍属学校に配属されたからです。そこは空軍保安部隊の司令基地で、大規模な通信傍受施設でもありました。」

パネリスト:
「その時点では民間人だったんですね？」

ビル・イングリッシュ:
「ええ、その頃にはもう民間人でした。チックスアンズに来て1か月ほど経った頃だったと思いますが、ある日オフィサーズクラブで、昔の司令官と偶然再会したんです……」


Bill English: "...the crew, the entire crew, were still in their safety seats, still in their harnesses, and they were all dead."

Panel participant: "Mutilated how?"

Bill English: "We didn't know it at the time, but they were mutilated in what we now refer to as the classic sense of the word. Eyes were missing, sections of their faces were skinned completely away, and the bone was cleaned like white, it was white bone, teeth, sections of the neck and throat all the way down to the oesophagus, their tongues had been removed..."

Panel participant: "So basically reminiscent of the..."

Bill English: "...Cattle mutilations, right, and there was no blood, and usually in a situation like that you would expect to see blood all over the place, and in confined quarters like that you would expect to be slipping and sliding in it. Well, we weren't any—" [tape cuts out] "—the very fact that there wasn't any was remarkable to us. So after we spent about an hour looking through the ship, collecting dog tags and taking photographs of everything, we pulled the flight recorder out of the aircraft, and we sealed the plane and filled it with explosive charges."

Bill English: "...We didn't have any more of it. I left Vietnam in 1971 after a two-year tour of duty there, and was sent to Germany and all, and by this time I had married, and my wife at that point was—" [tape cuts] "—So we took a transfer to England where she was assigned to the dependent schools at RAF Chicksands, which is an Air Force Security Services command base, a big air listening base. 

Panel participant: "So you're a civilian by this time?"

Bill English: "I'm a civilian by this time, and I guess we'd been at Chicksands for a month, and I was at the officers club one day, and I happened to meet an old commanding officer..."
